In Kenya, we collaborate with Seniors Without Borders (SuG), which since 2008 has worked on building self-help groups among poor local farmers in the area around Mount Kenya in the Shamba Farming and Ecotourism (SFE) project.<\/p>\n

Local farmers:<\/strong> The self-help groups work with agroforestry, also known as the shamba method, where afforestation is carried out by combining agricultural crops with tree planting. This ensures that the soil is covered with vegetation all year round, and this prevents leaching of nutrients and erosion. In the shamba system, traditional agricultural crops are grown and locally adapted tree species and fodder plants are planted, which are produced in local nurseries.<\/p>\n

Students:<\/strong> Derived from the collaboration with SuG and its partner organization in Kenya, we are also planting \"demonstration shambas\" at schools as a learning process where students participate in tree planting and are taught agroforestry and permaculture.<\/p>\n
